Supplementary materials for kata training - дополнительные материалы для тренировки по ката: Ji'in

Please remember: none of videos and books can replace a practice in dôjô!

Ji'in (慈蔭) - the name can be written down in two ways, thus, leading to two different translations:
寺院 - "Temple Grounds" - "Земли храма"
慈陰 - "Love [and] Shadow" - "Любовь и тень"

Funakoshi Gichin Sensei tried to rename Ji'in as Shôkyo (松陰) ("Pine Shadow" - "Тень сосны"), but the new name didn't stay.

Ji'in belongs probably to Tomari-te. Funakoshi Sensei could possibly learn this kata from Itosu Anko Sensei.

Jion, Jitte and Ji'in are very often classified into one group because they share similar techniques.

Andre Bertel says in his blog: "In Tokyo 1993, after passing my JKA (Matsuno-group) yondan, Asai Sensei said to me at the after party "if Nakayama Sensei had not so prematurely died, there would have been a Best Karate 12, featuring Wankan and Jiin. Also a 'special advice section on kata', much similar to Best Karate 8"."

Supplementary materials for kata training - дополнительные материалы для тренировки по ката: Sôchin

Please remember: none of videos and books can replace a practice in dôjô!

Sôchin (壯鎭) - "Strength [and] Calm" ("Strongly Rooted") -"Сила [и] спокойствие" ("Прочно укорениться").

Sôchin was probably created by Funakoshi Yoshitaka in the late 1930s. There are number of similarities to Sôchin of Aragaki Seisho (an Okinawan martial arts master, 1840-1918(?1920)). Thus, Aragaki Sôchin could be used as a basis.

Aragaki Seisho (an Okinawan martial arts master, 1840-1918(?1920)) taught Sôchin to Mabuni Kenwa (1889-1952, the founder of Shitô ryû). As in case with Nijû Shi Ho (Niseishi), Sôchin could be learned by Funakoshi Yoshitaka and Nakayama Masatoshi from Mabuni Kenwa.

Funakoshi Gichin Sensei tried to rename Sôchin as Hakko ("Eight Storms" ("Восемь бурь")), but the new name didn't stay.

Kankû Shô (観空小) - "Looking to the Sky - Small" ("Взгляд в небо - малый вариант").

Many versions of Kushanku (Kankû) kata are known in Shuri Te. Kankû Dai was the favourite kata of Funakoshi Gichin Sensei.

Kankû Shô was derived from Kankû Dai by Itosu Yasutsune.

4b. migi maeude hineri - hips are in shomen. The application for this technique is the release from a wrist grip. Thus, don't use your arm only to break the grip, use your hips too.

5b. hidari maeude hineri - see notes for 4b.

7. migi shô tsukamu uke, hidari shô migi tekubi o tsukami - hips are in shomen.

Some notes on Bassai Shô

Tora Jo dôjô: Supplementary materials for kata training - дополнительные материалы для тренировки по ката: Bassai Shô

I provide the names of techniques as well as their numbers according to the book of Nakayama Masatoshi "Best Karate. Vol. 9. Bassai Shô, Kankû Shô, Chinte". Kodansha International, 1987. If some other names are used, then the source is provided.

1a-1b. ryô shô de kôhô o harau; ryô shô jôdan yoko barai - don't jump high, but move horizontally.

2a-2b. migi shô hitai mae ni kazasu, hidari shô hidari koshi mae; hidari te hidari kata mae, migi shô migi kata ue - for a better understanding, practice against a partner with bo (jô, or any suitable stick), like we did in dôjô.

3a. migi maeude gedan sukui uke - don't bend too much, while blocking.

16. ryo shô tsukami uke - hips are in gyaku hanmi.

20b, 23, 25. migi ken migi yoko chûdan zuki (tsuki uke), hidari ken migi yoko chûdan zuki - left punch is chûdan zuki, not kagi zuki.

24. hidari ken hidari yoko chûdan zuki (tsuki uke), migi ken hidari yoko chûdan zuki - right punch is chûdan zuki, not kagi zuki.

26. hidari shô chûdan tsukami uke, migi shô gedan tsukami uke - there are several versions of this technique. I consider none to be wrong, as long as 1) the principles behind the techniques are not violated (nothing should be additionally invented) and 2) student knows the application of the version he/she performs.

27. migi shô chûdan tsukami yose, hidari shô gedan tsukami yose - see notes for 26.

I will update this list further, adding some more notes. Please watch the announcement list above!

I sincerely hope that this will help you to perfect the kata further. Osu!

Supplementary materials for kata training - дополнительные материалы для тренировки по ката: Chinte

Please remember: none of videos and books can replace a practice in dôjô!

Chinte (珍手) - "Rare (extraordinary) Hand" ("Редкая (выдающаяся) рука"). Sometimes translated also as "Strange Hand" ("Странная рука") or "Unusual Hand" ("Необычная рука").

Chinte is believed to be a Shuri Te kata. Funakoshi Gichin Sensei tried to rename this kata as Shôin, but the new name didn't stay.

Chinte features unusual hand techniques (which explain the name of the kata) and only one kick.

And, yes! Three hops at the end! I have seen three explanations:
1) three hops are the traces of some lost techniques;
2) the application is holding an opponent's arm and moving back to break his wrist (I will show this application during the training);
3) these three hops were added in order to return to a starting point (this one sounds strange to me).
